During the PDPP program, we have been hearing the term “Inquiry” quite often. Last semester, we completed an education-focused inquiry project for our seminar. It was an interesting experience, as it was my first time completing a formal inquiry project. I ended up making a guide to outdoor education for Victoria based K-3 teachers. The guide is available here if you are interested in checking it out.

I had a lot of ideas of what I could do for this inquiry project. I wanted to pick something that interested me, would be beneficial as an in-service teacher and wasn’t too ambitious due to the time constraints of this semester. I decide to explore Google Suite tools and there use in the classroom. The google for educators certificates were of interest to me and I have decided to complete level 1 (and level 2 if I end up having time).

I think that taking the certification courses and exams will a) make me more familiar with google tools and their potential uses in the classroom b) look good on my resume when I apply for jobs and c) provide me with an opportunity to thing critically about when and how digital tools, such as the google suite, can be used in elementary school classrooms.

After doing some research, I realized that SD 61 (Victoria), SD 62 (Sooke) and SD 63 (Saanich) all use google products in their schools. As these are the school districts in the Greater Victoria Area, it makes sense to learn more about their uses in the classroom.

As part of the planning for this inquiry project, we were directed to this planning document from the Victoria School of Innovation and Inquiry. I found it very useful for planning my thinking. My filled out version is available below. I now have a few questions I plan to answer in my posts to come.

How do you best introduce the Google suite to the classroom? At what grade should each tool be introduced?
What privacy concerns are there with the Google suite? How do local school boards address this?
How can I as an educator best use Google suite to enhance my classroom? At what point are we using technology for technology’s sake?
